Ultimate Homemade Salisbury Steak

  • Author: Savannah Collins
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

This recipe brings back memories of cozy family dinners with a plate of Salisbury steak smothered in rich mushroom and onion gravy. It’s a classic comfort food that makes you feel at home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 for the best flavor)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers)
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced (cremini or button)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (for thickening)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, beaten egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well until combined, but don’t overwork the meat.
  2. Form the mixture into 4 equal patties, about 3/4-inch thick. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent them from puffing up while cooking.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a little olive oil. Once hot, add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and mushrooms. Sauté for about 5 minutes until softened and browned.
  5. Pour in the beef broth, scraping the bottom of the skillet to release any browned bits. Bring to a simmer.
  6. Stir in the cornstarch mixture and cook for another minute until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them. Allow them to simmer together for a couple of minutes to meld the flavors.
  8. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot with mashed potatoes or rice to soak up that delicious gravy!
